Trash: Coming Through the Airwaves

Dicky | December 27th, 2010

Sometimes you get wrapped up in a television show even though you find it totally idiotic. Later, when you re-encounter it, you think: Why did I ever watch this? And then, five minutes later… you are hooked again

So it happened with me and Weeds when I was at a friends house the other day. Inexplicably I found myself watching 4 or 5 episodes in a row. Whatever happened in the prior episodes was mostly irrelevant; the characters did all sorts of irrational and outrageous things that you can figure out just by looking at the situation they are currently in. It’s pure trash, utterly compelling, and 100% forgettable.

I was also reacquainted with Glee, which I haven’t been watching this season at all. I caught three episodes of that (it was raining and I was doing laundry!). The music is just dreadful in this show. I still find it hard to believe that, probably for many people, the music numbers are the highlight. Thank DVR! The show remains just as I remembered it: saccharine, ridiculous, and pretty fun. All of this gay bashing against Kurt is a little heavy handed. I realize it’s sort of topical, but it’s not exactly interesting to portray some homophobic jock as a closet-case who, after Kurt finally stands up for himself after being threatened, kisses Kurt, and then runs off screen looking confused. It would be more interesting if he were motivated purely by blind hatred. Also I wish Kurt was slutty. Instead, we get this neutered prude man whose first kiss is with a homophobic jock: safe, boring, predictable.
