Let’s talk about plants.
I love plants. It seems like an idiotic thing to say, but… well, there it is. The Theodore Payne Foundation is in Sun Valley and is are full of plants; specifically, native Californian plants. A non-profit that preserves and promotes (and sells) native plants, the Theodore Payne Foundation has wonderful sprawling grounds you can stroll around in and learn about the different environments and the living things that make them unique to California.
It was exciting when a friend offered to drive up there recently since I don’t frequently have the ability to make it that far north into the valley. I was mostly acquainted with them through their booth at the Hollywood Farmer’s Market.
Let’s talk about that for a minute. I can’t even coherently assemble my thoughts on this matter, but I am completely unsympathetic to the Los Angeles Film School and their desire to open the street to cars and kick out the farmer’s market. I don’t care if they have a parking garage that is inaccessible because of the farmer’s market. You know what? Sometimes living in Los Angeles means people’s streets in front of their houses are made completely inaccessible because of film shoots or other things. Living in Hollywood, right near where this takes place, means constantly being inconvenienced by street closures for movie premieres, award shows, and any other variety of such events, with enough regularity that it can seem like a weekly occurrence. The city should either decide that streets cannot be closed down for any purpose, or they should just say you know what? These people who live here have their streets closed down for the interests of private industry and business all the time. If they want some streets closed down every Sunday so that they can buy fruits and vegetables directly from the farmers who grow them? They deserve it. Read more about it.
