Canadian cell phone companies are notorious. Plans are expensive, the newest cell phones are unavailable (or wait-listed) and to get any kind of deal you have to be locked into 3-year contract. Our companies didn’t even offer SIM card phones until recently. WTF? Currently my contract is up and I’m weighing my options. The hardest part is choosing the phone, and being limited by my options.
I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about Android. They seem to be giving Apple some healthy competition, especially in light of the antenna panic on the 4G iPhone. However, the Andriod phone that I want – the HTC Incredible – is not provided by the mobile companies here. And what about Blackberry? They are marketing BBM pretty hard and I must admit that many of my friends have Blackberry phones so I could probably do most of my texting BBM style.
But damn it, the iPhone is just so sexy. Being the holiday season I probably can’t even get one – apparently they have been wait-listed since they arrived in Canada this summer. I could buy one in the US but then I pay full price, have to get it unlocked and the warranty wont be honored here. If I sign a contract with a provider they give me a significant deal on the phone I choose, but then they have me under their thumb. The illusion of choice is really frustrating. But off I go anyway, my next post will probably be about how much I love my new iPhone.
