If you aren’t moved to a booty jiggling frenzy by New Orleans’ latest musical export you just can’t be helped. New Orleans Bounce and its offshoot, Sissy Bounce, encompass a musical genre and a dance. It is exactly what it sounds: a playful, raunchy, butt jiggling movement.
Sissy Bounce is the queer sub-genre of bounce and it’s thanks to these machismo defying MCs, like Katey Red and Big Freedia, that Bounce has made it to a national audience. A national movement of exuberant hip hop that is inclusive to all sexual orientations is awesome to behold.
I caught one of the grande dames of Sissy Bounce, Big Freedia, opening for Kool Keith last night in Austin and let me tell you, it is a show not to be missed. Big Freedia is a clever MC who knows how to work the club and hold court over hordes of booty bouncers. She gets her biggest fans up on stage to shake it with her own dancers. Booty Bounce basically requires you to stick your derriere in the air and wiggle it till it starts to bounce like jello. If that’s not your bag, or if your butt just don’t move like that, you’re not left out. A room full of booty bouncers is awesome to behold, but even more fun to try.
