Call it coincidence that during these cold snowy winter nights when subzero temperatures force us to hide out in our lairs, envious of those sorts of creatures such as bears lucky enough to hibernate through the winter, some of the best films of the year are brought forth into the public for the first time.
This is the time of year when Hollywood’s top directors pull out their big guns. A delightful time for cinema lovers, movie theatres and hedonists alike.
This year’s primary contenders are vast and varied. Rather than attempting to surmise who the winners may be, let me merely offer a short list of fabulous must-see films that happen to have been nominated for at least one Oscar in 2011. The contenders:
1) Black Swan – Daring. Seductive. Dangerous. Beautiful. Enchanting. Haunting. Natalie Portman is amazing.
2) True Grit – Not the Coen Brothers’ best film by any stretch, but its well-paced story is well worth watching, and Jeff Bridges is hilarious.
3) Toy Story 3 – Ken meets Barbie and takes her to his dream house… and the toys embark on an epic Indiana Jones-esque adventure. 100% pure fun.
4) The Social Network – how many times a day do You check your Facebook? The true story of its nerdy creator.
5) The King’s Speech – an empowering narrative based on the true story of British King George VI that may inspire you to conquer the things that hold you back
