Dance music adapts to its geography. People take what they know and rework and remix according to local tradition and Vancouver’s digital Cumbia scene is no different.
Cumbia: the traditional Colombian, a lost folk music that has grown and spawned its way into multiple variations throughout South America retains its flavor in the digital hands of a new generation of Cumbianites, Vancouver’s representatives being Gameboy, Ben Ulis and Will Eede.
The boys have been slamming classic Colombian rhythms and Latin American folk together with a sound system sensibility, adding a dash of bass science and blowing people away.
For those vibing hard on the sounds of guarachero and 8-ball as well as dubstep and garage, these guys are repping hard for a sound carried by the Dutty Artz family in New York, Zizek in Buenos Aires, Villa Diamante, and beyond.
