Yes, Hank Moody (David Duchovny) is back for season 4. Out of jail and ready to face the world and family for poor decisions being made. After spending time in jail I think this Hank is a bit more contrite and a little morose, but still as assured and cavalier as always. Wherein every lady in every situation wants to have sex with him, and he knows it, you are always sort of hoping the guy learns some kind of lesson, and evolves. However, he seems to fall further and further away from the things that we think he holds in high regards, like his ex-wife who he regards as the love of his life, and his daughter.
The usual suspects from seasons past are still in the mix. Charlie Runkle (Evan Handler) seems to be the brunt of all the jokes, and sometimes it’s cringe-worthy. Moody is still Runkle’s only client, and makes for that continued dysfunctional symbiosis.
The dialogue is often very funny, and being from California I accept the openness of the sexuality of the show. The problem is that it has become a bit too indulgent, with misogynistic overtones that have become constant, even though Moody keeps seeking out his supposed one true love.
Almost all the characters are pretty unreliable, but most of them still likable. I see Californication going to the same places that Entourage did, and then eventually going away when we could have continued to really like the characters.
