The Internet is a horrible place to spend time. It’s an endless expanse of things you don’t want to look at, and yet feel compelled to look at simply because they are there. Well, it’s nice sometimes to find a cozy little corner of the Internet where nice people you sort of know are hanging out doing things.
Ear Meal, an experimental music web-television program, is such a place. You’ll find Michael Winter, Ezra Buchla, Corey Fogel and other experimental musicians from Los Angeles, seemingly cramped in the corner of the Collage Ensemble’s recording studio, making music. It’s almost like hanging out at your friend’s apartment, without leaving bed. You can watch it live every Wednesday night at 9:30 pm or… whenever. Morton Subotnick even appeared via Skype. Here we are, in the future.
Sometimes when live streaming video sites, or you know, too many hours on Facebook or excessive G-chatting freaks me out, it’s nice to take a trip back in time to a simpler era of the internet. The Wayback Machine is a lovely little thing. Let’s look at Yahoo in the year 1997 for instance:
Isn’t that nice? If only more websites looked like this: oldstylewebdesign.com I might enjoy sitting in front of a computer again. I guess the truth is that lurking behind all of the glitzy flash veneer applied onto websites is a beautiful tiled jpeg background.
