Toronto based R&B artist Weeknd will be HUGE, but for now he has so much “indie” appeal that it makes me wonder if there’ll be a divide at all between mainstream urban and indie music a few years from now… oh yeah, these guys can actually really sing. The first time I heard from him he was sampling Beach House on the track Loft Music. I was convinced it was a production by The Dream or someone already huge. Now he has a song referencing the sexiest song ever- Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game - only its called Wicked Games and its a full R&B workout a la R. Kelly (swearing intact), as well as an insanely sexy track entitled What You Need that sounds like post-funky house producer Jacques Greene made it, after all they’re both from Toronto (oh wait, Youtube says Greene just did an edit currently at about 700 views).
And this, as of now, unreleased Jaques Greene tune might be the best thing I’ve heard from the post Joy Orbison landscape. Heartbreakingly good.
