While most of Austin was resting up for the insane whirlwind of shows, parties, and debauchery that is South By South West, the brassiest and classiest of us were getting down with the best of our fine nation’s street bands. The first annual Honk TX brought marching, brass, and community bands from across the country to the streets of Austin, TX for a three day festival. I think this is my new favorite genre of music. Too bad I can’t have a mini band to play for me in my living room whenever I want, it’s just not the same on mp3.
It’s hard not to move your feet when confronted with a pulsing, bouncing brass section blowing their little hearts out. I particularly loved the confrontational style of What Cheer Brigade from Providence, RI. Trombone players march fearlessly towards the crowd and are soon engulfed in the dancing mass. Tuba players hop like menacing bunnies at the audience, stiring up a frenzied cheer.
