Volt, AG, Svinet

A slew of new restaurants have recently opened in Stockholm, with more to come this autumn. My favorite of these would have to be Volt, a ‘gastrobistro’ set up by four young chefs and two waiting staff all under the age of thirty in the area of Östermalm.

The restaurant decor at Volt is a little bit too ‘bachelor pad’ for me, with black walls, seats and flooring, but the food and service is fantastic. Only 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 desserts to choose from, which – in this age of overchoice - makes it reasonably easy to make a decision. The three, five or seven course menus are also very affordable, and all this makes for an exciting option for eating out.

AG - ‘the silver gallery’ – has undergone a major change with the owners of Rolf Kök turning it into Stockholm’s real first temple of meat. A big meat locker at the entrance informs the palate, in this old silver factory tucked away on a backstreet on Kungsholmen, that meat is very much on the menu in its many forms. They’ve still retained a focus on art in the restaurant, though it wasn’t all to my taste and I really wasn’t a fan of the two tree installations at all. The bar has been reduced, but it’s still a great hangout with meaty tapas on offer and Brooklyn Lager (Ed. it’s everywhere!) on tap in 1/2 pints.

And finally, even more meat will be on the menu this summer with Stockholm’s smaller meat chapel moving outdoors into the yard. Djuret on Gamalstan is now becoming Svinet, serving only pork in all its various ways, weather permitting of course.

I can’t wait for the summer!
