Okay. So the sign boasts of it being the one and only, and that is not only a boast, but true. Those who have eaten at Nicholas’ know what that means. It is a Lebanese restaurant, and it is one of the best places in Portland to eat.
Admittedly, there is not much atmosphere, and the space (on Grand Ave. at least) is small, but the food, and the wait are ultimately worth EVERYTHING. The service is usually quite attentive, largely I think because there are many people waiting, but additionally because there is a confidence with their product. The story of the restaurant’s genesis can be read at nicholasrestaurant.com, in addition to their menu and locations.
I would say that it is some of my favorite, and best food in Portland. I am a meat eater, but it caters to a vegan audience as well. When you are seated, I would suggest getting the “big bread” which is the largest flat bread you will ever see, and get the side of hummus. The big bread alone can easily be shared with up to 6 to 8 persons.
Their menu, featured on their website, and within, features a very comprehensive approach to their food. I would highly recommend the Chicken Kabobs, as it is served with freshly diced tomatoes, tzatziki sauce, and a melty saffron rice. They have mezza platters, appetizers, fruit drinks, but no alcohol. The experience is entirely about the food, and great company, as it should be.
