I can’t fault AMC, they just continue to pump out the content like it’s nobody’s business and it kills me because it’s all just so damn good!
The Killing is another one of those shows that takes advantage of Vancouver’s chameleonic tendencies to be able to pass for just about anywhere and make it look brilliant.
Somebody originally pitched it to me as a series that would’ve been like Rashomon, but in a modern crime drama style. It’s not quite that but it’s still doing the trick.
It’s essentially a look at the investigation of the murder of a young girl, sifting from the perspective of family to investigators to suspects. It reminds me a great deal of the BBC’s work in the Kenneth Branaugh crime drama, Wallander. It’s stark, almost the point of glacial at times but it holds up because every element, from the acting to the cinematography is just so good.
You’re not going to recognize any of the actors, a typical AMC casting trait post Breaking Bad, but it doesn’t matter, this is really a show that’s going to make the careers of everyone from the parents and their scorched earth responses to their daughters death, to the cops who just don’t know how to judge precisely what’s going on in this town they love.
Riveting TV once again and thankfully, there’s no need to a witty goth or a forensics guy to tell jokes at any point. Just how I like my crime drama.
