He rides again, that honey-voiced veteran indie crooner, Bill Callahan. And he sounds better than ever. Bill Callahan has had a career spanning more than a decade, and his latest release, Apocalypse, proves that he can still enchant with his spare lyrics and two-chord progressions.
Apocalypse is a topical album that captures a contemporary America through Callahan’s unflowery lyrics. At his show in Austin I was pleased to see that the crowd was intensely enraptured by Bill and his three piece band. Callahan has a history of touring with his girlfriends. Last time I saw him he opened for Joanna Newsom, and it was a phenomenal pairing. This time around Sophia Knapp started off the show. Unfortunately Knapp’s music kind of falls flat.
