Penelope Cruz + Almodovar

With 32 films under his belt and a 33rd announced for 2012, Pedro Almodovar has firmly established himself as the world’s most revered Spanish filmmaker of his time.  His films encapsulate elements of melodrama, suspense, and dark comedy, woven together in a jumble of complex narratives that probe deeply into universal themes like passion, obsession, lust, identity and family ties.

Tugging at the carnal realities of human desire, Almodovar’s films have a timeless quality.  I just watched Matador, made in 1986, and it struck me with such powerful emotional chords that it could have been made yesterday.

After taking in this decadent cinematic feast consisting of bullfights, broken-hearted models, murder, confession, and fatal attraction, I decided to watch as many of Almodovar’s films as I could in as short a time as possible.  I have since seen Volver, Talk To Her and Broken Embraces.

Next up : The Skin I Live In, just revealed at Cannes.

We shall see if it will take the cake from Matador, my current fav.

Matador
