While most people are whining about June gloom (I love it), the thing to keep in mind is that summer will be here soon enough.
And what does that mean? It means I’m going to need to eat vast amounts of ice cream pretty soon. A new ice cream place opened on Vermont in Los Feliz called Paradis a short while ago, and on a warm day while out on my bike, I decided to stop in with a friend and try it. The conceit of the ice cream shop is that it is Danish ice cream; what differentiates that from other kinds of ice cream is something I am still unclear on, but it is perfectly delicious. The ice cream is made fresh every day, using fresh fruits and ingredients. I will most undoubtedly be spending much time inside of their brightly colored shop this summer.
Summer also makes me crave icy, sweet citrus things. Frequent trips to MOCA this year have resulted in my realizing that the café in the Grand Ave. location had changed to a place called Lemonade at some point since they had the Dan Graham show in… god, 2009. And, well, guess what they have? Fresh squeezed lemonade in a variety of flavors, including pineapple coriander and watermelon rosemary. I had a blood orange lemonade while I was there, and though for the relatively cool day that it was it seemed a bit overly sweet, I could imagine just how refreshing it would taste on a day that was in the 80’s, and am looking forward to taking that refreshment in the coming warm months. They have food also, some of which seemed vaguely appealing, although they have cartoonishly oversized macarons, which they inexplicably call “macaroons”.
