I have been referencing the themes of Net-art and internet-punk a lot on this site since before maybe it was ready to talk about, yet I still have a hard time showing it beyond blue hair and Second Life images on party flyers. It hasn’t really been canonized as a movement and the terms aren’t really there to enable a brief description. It is a medium that embraces (with hatred, irony, and love) the total nihilism inherent in virtual existence as well as the ersatz spiritualism of the new-age philosophies found in cybernetics theories.
New York’s Eyebeam Gallery is both net-art and techy at the same time. It appeals to both fans of tumblrs such as Zenmafia (NSFW) as it does Wired magazine. Someone affiliated with Eyebeam made this site and it has got some buzzyness, at least in my fb stream. Another site with presence is Dump.FM where people communicate with animated gifs. Art collective jstchillin is a good place to investigate some IRL presentations of the genre, while the best site is probably still DIS magazine which I posted about several months back. Link around! Discover new artists! I could probably write 5 pages about this without trying!
