Monkeys Tigers and Steaming Jungles

Monkeys Tigers and Steaming Jungles is an experimental-music project conceived by South African vocalist Portia Malunga-Rowling, while living in Brighton(UK).

Through collaboration with producers Nico Willems and Gareth Llewellyn, recording for what was supposed to be the first, self titled album – MTS Jungles began, although only eight tracks were completed before Portia had to leave the United Kingdom in 2009.

The collection of songs remained virtually unheard! Not available on the Internet, only on audio discs, copied by Portia herself and passed around between friends.

It was only in February this year that music journalist Roger Young heard the tracks, persuaded Portia to set-up a Myspace and reviewed the “album”, declaring that Monkeys Tigers and Steaming Jungles “sounds like nothing else on the South African musical landscape right now”.

Piercing, soulful and ethereal, Portia’s vocals meander through an eclectic terrain of minimal-ambient sounds, heavy synths and later Llewellyn’s meaning guitar to create an absolutely enchanting sound.
