My partner brought home telescope from his parents house – it had been a gift from when he was 7 years old. On the night of a full moon we set it up on the rooftop deck and marveled at the universe. It perhaps seems inappropriate to find this antiquated contraption in the technology section but in the era of app this, and social media that – it’s refreshing to see things through a concrete lens.
The telescope was an invented sometime in the 1600′s, championed by Galileo himself and continued to evolve bringing about key discoveries during the Scientific Revolution. Today’s telescopes are huge beasts, 5-10 metres wide – using electromagnetic fields, and neutrinos to see crazy things like supernovas, solar flares, parallel universes, and extra terrestrials (well maybe not).
Anyway, the point is that sometimes it’s necessary to pull back from the sensationalism of our fast paced lives and get in touch with the bigger picture. Take it from Kansas…
