When it comes to active faces in Vancouver bass music, there may be no bigger a movement in Vancouver right now than that of the Shah DJs.
No, not the Shah’s DJ’s, although let’s be honest, you couldn’t mess with the fact the Shah of Iran had his own DJ crew. No, the Smooth Hard Aggressively Happy crew continue a long lineage of Vancouver jungle fifteen plus years now. The Elderly raving massive will remember the work of HQ Communications. Anyone seen humping a bass bin in Vancouver in the last decade will remember the work of the Automatic crew. The SHAH DJs are simply the next in line.
Presenting a full spectrum of dnb, from liquid funk, to dub rock, neuro funk and more, they’ve brought rather a lot of people thought Vancouver. Everyone from High Contrast to Hive to Calibre. They’ve also got an astute ear for the non-jungle tempo stuff having debuted the likes of Von D in Vancouver.
This would be all fine and good, but the seven strong collective of DJ’s, photographers, VJs, graphic designers and all around good people can kill it creatively where it counts as well. As DJs, they’ve all killed it at parties past and present. Their visual aesthetic avoids the typical bass music cliches for a cheeky take on the traditional drum and bass video. All in all, they rinse it proper and have been doing it for a while now, which is a city like Vancouver, is always a useful thing to have around.
