New age pop replacing Goth Revival

Callan | July 27th, 2011

Not sure if its cuz of Gang Gang Dance or what but everyone seems to be using Cirque Du Soleil synths and new-agey bell tones.  Somehow many of the parties going right now in NY seem to be referencing a sort of 80′s new-age mysticism as well- think words like “gaze” and “vision.” Now for my usual disclaimer, this trend has been going for years (about 5), but its really “happening” now.

The great new Washed Out superhit “Eyes be Closed” sounds just like Moby’s Porcelain (is he Christian or something too?). And last night I saw a girl Grimes play a secret show and it was a somewhat stellar combination of Kate Bush, 80′s new-age, and indie-dance. Everything kinda reminds me of the really twinkly Bjork remixes from the late 90′s…. oh wait sh*t, Bjork just wrote a song about Crystals.  This trend is at the over-saturation point, but I don’t see it leaving anytime soon. Its like a campus craze. Its so big I may have to do a 2.0 soon.
