Farmers Markets: Fresh + Local, Keeping it Real

Fresh Fruits at Marché Jean-Talon

Montreal is home to two wonderful fresh indoor/outdoor markets that are open year-round.  The Jean Talon and Atwater Market, where you can find everything from fresh seasonal fruits and veggies to Foie Gras, organic meats and chocolate, Lobsters and seafood, artisan bread, and cheeses from around the globe.   In the summertime these markets expand, opening their doors to a plethora of outdoor vendors selling fresh produce, plants, and flowers.  But lately some smaller fresher incarnations of the market concept have been popping up around town.

Around the Plateau and Mile-End there are several of these smaller seasonal markets.  The Marché Fermier, on the corner of Laurier and St-Dominique, is open Thursdays from 3-7pm and Sundays from 11:30-3:30.  Alternatives include Outremont Bio Sundays (Sundays 9am-4:30 pm), Little Burgundy Market, Faubourg and Frontenac Markets.  These temporary markets are fostering a sense of community as well as pushing the growing trend to eat sustainable local food.  By eliminating the middle man between food and farmers, items can be offered at a lower price and are often fresher as well as they come directly from the sources of production.

So the next time you find yourself hungry on a weekend in the summertime, why bother going to a restaurant or a grocery store when you can stop and find what you need under the sun and support Montreal’s local food-growing economies.
