The Thesis Social Jam has become somewhat of an institution, perhaps more so than the Thesis Concept Store where the jam sessions are held.
On every first Sunday of the month the store is transformed into an arena for a massive street party. Revelers from all over Johannesburg make their way to Mofolo in Soweto for the “TSJS” as it has now become know.
On Sunday the 7th of August Thesis celebrated its third birthday. Tumi and the Volume, one of South Africa’s most revered hip-hop acts headlined the show with back up from the enigmatic rapper Siya Shezi.
The line-up is always an indicator of whats happening on the Johannesburg hip hop scene. Wireless G, one of the events founders and resident dj acts more like a curator, organizing a bill with signed and unsigned artists, dj’s, poets and comedians all together in a perfect balance of commercial and underground.
In addition to being one of the coolest gigs in town, Thesis most distinctive achievement has been its endeavor to reverse the socio-geographic legacy of apartheid (where areas are split by race) by becoming a point of access into Soweto for youth of all races.
