There’s a pretty clear formula for producing music that I will like.
Synth strings, voices drenched in reverb, throbbing bass lines, stupid drum machines. This song Just Wait by Crozet does these things very nicely. Although I should submit a complaint that I am tired of hearing things that sound like this as sounding like “pure 80’s bliss;” aside from the use of synthesizers, this sounds pretty unlike music from the 80’s, and I’d never mistake it for anything made in any time but the past few years.
Nicolas Jaar
Very different but also very good, on the advice of a friend I’ve been listening to Nicolas Jaar lately a lot. It is at times quite beautiful, at other times kind of w/e. My favorite thing about it is Nicolas himself, who is very delicious to behold.
A friend also gave me a copy of Tim Hecker’s Dropped Pianos, which is quite lovely. Mindless and “atmospheric. Just fine.
