Jimmy Edgar: Bringing the Funk To the New Generation

Claire | June 25th, 2012

His music almost sounds like it could come from the 7o’s, or the 80′s, or the 90′s, but then there is something distinctly hi-fi about it that defies those possibilities.  Something about the crispness of the sounds, popping out from amongst each other yet floating delicately.  That’s how I like it.

Berlin’s Jimmy Edgar has been cranking out releases steadily since his emergence onto the post-funk sass electronic circuit in 2004, gradually gaining momentum until the present day, at which point he is rapidly becoming a global superstar.  The reasons are simple.  His songs are oozing with funk, dripping with sex, and are electronified to the point that despite his often subdued rhythmic textures, the beats pack a punch on the dance floor.  In other words: the guy is a dangerous seductive funk bomb waiting to explode.

With song titles like Hot Raw Sex, New Touch, and Physical Motion, the guy is on fire with one dance floor weapon after another.  Vocoders, funky basslines, richly moving textures, and not-so-subtle lyrics all contribute to this man’s dance bomb-ness.  Move over Parliament, Bootsy Collins, and Felix da Housecat, here comes Jimmy Edgar…

He also headlined the MUTEK festival this year in Montreal on Friday, June 1st.
