Rap music is having an indefinable moment, from really talented and buzzy artists like Danny Brown and Spaceghost Purple to the spellbindingly charismatic girls that love them such as Kitty Pryde, or the endearingly shy Kilo Kish, older people are left to scratch their heads once again. With the internet we see not “indie rap” as it is sometimes referred to, but rather internet era rap. It’s not striving for any underground “scene” even though it skips corporate music channels in its rise to popularity, using Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube etc. When the labels come as they did to Kreayshawn etc they then sign for millions.
Whether or not Kitty Pryde, a 17 year old with a popular tumblr and a self-aware mumble will be the recipient of a record contract or just tons of free clothes and a really high Klout score we have yet to see.
