Rheking The Party

Kuma | July 3rd, 2012

There are lots of dudes who do lots of things in Vancouver. However there are few who them well, this is where Rhek comes in.

Renaissance man? Sure you could call Alex Usow that. Dude’s got fingers in pies for days and those are some pretty damn fine pies. I have fond memories of buying vinyl from the guy at Vancouver hip hop institution, Beat Street. Rhek’s got DJ chops for days, one of those dudes who’s been repping for the city’s hip hop family since as long as I can remember.

But he’s not just a DJ. After all, I do have a Rhek canvas hanging in my living room. As an artist of some local renown, Rhek’s work has graced everything from people’s walls to telephone polls.  With a visual aesthetic that slams urban iconography together with a very distinct sense of humor, his is a take that pops wherever you see it.

This visual skill has also translated well into his current domination in Gastown. With involvement in Sharks and Hammers, Sea Monstr Sushi and Catalog Gallery, we should expect to see more of Rhek for a very long time to come.
