With all the places to buy glasses in town it’s no wonder four eyes good two eyes bad here in The City of Roses. Amy Saks, Hollywood Vintage and Reynolds Optical (Founded in Portland, 1910) are all local, stylish places to find specs.
It has been my experience as a single girl in Portland that guys MAKE passes on girls that wear glasses. I’ve gone out thinking, “uhg, I look horrible, I don’t even have my contacts in” and people will stop me to compliment my glasses. You can definitely hear a conversation or two about glasses when you’re out and about.
Personally, I always talk to certain friends about the subject. Where did you get you latest pair, do you like the way they fit, et al. I believe the reason for the popularity of specs in Portland is simple, we’ve made counter culture, the norm here. “Nerds” are the most coveted men in the bar; the more you know about video games, fantasy novels, and Star Trek, the more the girls swoon and with the Zooey Deschanel and her “adorkable” show, The New Girl gaining in popularity, I’m thinking this beauty trend won’t be specific to Portland much longer.
