The José María Velasco Gallery, established 61 years ago in Tepito, one of the fiercest neighborhoods in the city, is one of the most active places in the capital. However, it is not especially popular amongst the great galleries scene. Perhaps this is due to its populist edge, which I consider more of a virtue. Besides working with the kids in the neighborhood and exhibiting art linked to live in Tepito, the José María Velasco Gallery imparts, twice a year, a class on double entendres.
“We began with a workshop, but now we’re handing out diplomas”, explains Anaid Ruiz, Outreach Coordinator for the Gallery. This year’s second programme will start in September. They expect to see dozens of people from Tepito and other areas of the city, eager to learn how to wield this fine art through the teachings of Lourdes Ruiz, three times national champion of double entendres. Diplomado en albures
La Galería José María Velasco, fundada hace 61 años en el barrio bravo de Tepito, es uno de los espacios de arte más activos en la ciudad. Sin embargo no es particularmente popular en la escena de las grandes galerías. Quizá sea por su cariz popular, el cual es al mismo tiempo una virtud valiosa. Además de trabajar con los niños del barrio y exhibir arte vinculado con la vida en Tepito, la Galería José María Velasco imparte dos veces al año un diplomado en albures.
“Empezamos haciendo un taller, pero ahora ya estamos dando un diploma”, explica Anaid Ruiz, coordinadora de difusión de la galería. En septiembre empieza el segundo diplomado de este año. Se espera que asistan decenas de personas de Tepito y de otras zonas de la ciudad interesadas en aprender el fino arte del albur a través de las enseñanzas de Lourdes Ruiz, campeona nacional de albures por tercer año consecutivo. El diplomado no tiene costo, y para participar sólo es necesario llamar al 5526-9157, pedir informes e inscribirse.
