Dog fights, off-road racing and no-rules wrestling. By looking at a young Dagestani artist Taus Makhacheva you would never guess that these subjects might have anything to do with her well-bred and delicate demeanor.
After graduating from the Goldsmith College, Taus moved back to her native region in the south of Russia in order to hit back as a established and confident artist. She has stormed art circles around the world with her bold and ironical take on contemporary Dagestan which appears to be torn apart by a fierce struggle between brutal traditions and modern gimmicks. Taus takes violence and nostalgia to the whole new esoteric level, and it’s hard not to watch her thoughtful videos with bated breath.
