Four years ago, Mr Price, “South Africa’s top value fashion retailer” partnered up with Elle South Africa to become part of the “Elle New Talent”, a young designer competition, which had already been running for ten years. Before this the competition produced top South African designers such as Terrence Bray, Jacques van der Watt and David Tlale. Since then no notable names have emerged and the collections shown each year, bar a few exceptions have been uninspired. Is this a coincidence? Is the youth of South African design in a slump? Or is the pursuit for viability having a negative effect on creativity?
