Bike (Food) Delivery Comes to Atlanta

Ben | July 1st, 2010

Elmyr’s the sort of filthy, disgusting, down-rig11ht-terrible place that all of my friend’s and I love. The walls are covered with graffiti from my favorite local street artists and taggers, the bar’s signature drink (“The Grizz”) is a shot of rotgut tequila poured into a bottle of corona, and there’s a daily $5 burrito/PBR special.

But Does It Float: A Less Precious Booooooom.com

Ben | June 30th, 2010

I like Booooooom, but I’m occasionally frustrated by the predictability of the site’s curation, which tends to focus on a fairly limited range of art styles. Fortunately, But Does It Float changes up the formula a little, using a two person curatorial team composed of designers Folkert Gorter and Atley G. Kasky. Read More

Werner Herzog: More Prolific Than God

Ben | May 28th, 2010

Werner Herzog is such a gratifying director to be getting into now. More and more of his movies and documentaries are coming out on DVD, and more critics are celebrating his work/influence. Read More

While I still find a good portion of my photography inspiration through Booooooom, I’ve been spending a lot more time on the DesignersCouch blog lately. Read More

Holy Fuck Holy Fuck Holy Fuck

Ben | May 18th, 2010

I’m listening to Holy Fuck’s 2005 self-titled LP as I write this sentence. Amazingly, their five year old debut album sounds like it could have come out last month, released through Wham City or another gonzo record label and instantly hailed by Pitchfork as the best undiscovered album of 2010.

Latin, their newest record, retains that sense of prescience, torturing conventional instruments into faux-electronic swoops and swells of sound. Their current tour skips over Atlanta, but I heard a rumor that a few of Holy Fuck’s member will be playing DJ sets locally in the fall.

Goth’s Back

Ben | April 28th, 2010

Designer Drugs play remix-ready dance music supported by dark, dark beats. Aesthetically, their music (and videos and shows) borrow a lot from a mixture of early 80’s English goth, “dark” Italo-Disco, and Florida’s mid-late 90’s goth club scene. Read More

The Man With a Movie Camera

Ben | April 27th, 2010

Per my girlfriend’s request, I recently watched Dziga Vertov’s Man With a Movie Camera. The film is a fantastic exploration of experimental techniques like freeze frames, jump cuts, split screens, Dutch angles, extreme close-ups, tracking shots, footage played backwards, and stop motion animation. While it seems like it could be too intellectual to really make for an enjoyable experience, Vertov brings a real sense of play to his experimentation, which makes the movie almost heart-warming.

Kyle, FTW

Ben | April 25th, 2010

Kyle posts an eclectic collection of music mixes, fashion photography, shots of her hand-crafted jewelry, and quotes from mid-20th century American authors. Her blog’s the latest addition to my fairly small bookmark list, and she can usually be relied on to post something awesome once or twice a week.

The Sound Table

Ben | April 25th, 2010

Photos courtesy Carlos Bell.

I’ve visited The Sound Table at least a half dozen times since they opened three weeks ago. They usually have really high profile DJ’s playing every week (half of The XX, Diplo/Major Lazer), and the venue tends to draw a very very hip crowd. So far The Sound Table’s kept a pretty low profile in Atlanta…even pretty knowledgeable locals haven’t all heard of it.

I Haven’t Seen Treme, but I Want To.

Ben | April 22nd, 2010

Treme, premiering April 11 in the US, is the brainchild of David Simon and Eric Overmyer, the creators of both Homicide: Life On the Streets and The Wire. That sentence by itself is probably enough to get you excited about the show.

Check out more info about Treme here.

Movies With Skinny Black Ties

Ben | March 17th, 2010

Specifically: A Serious Man, An Education, and Nine. Each of these movies feature, as their main character, a magical time occurring somewhere between the end of World War II and the birth of the cellular phone. Men and women wander through the movies wearing lovingly recreated period suites and dresses. But apart from the strong visuals, I can’t recommend A Serious Man, An Education, or Nine: watching the movies feels more like watching a historical recreation than watching an actual story.

Hipster Architecture

I started reading ‘Sup Magazine this fall, when they ran interviews with a few of my recent favorite bands (Neon Indian, Washed Out). Since then, they’ve branched out beyond music coverage a little, but they still provide one of the best online sources for info on the best new music. Read More
