I’m not sure I can find the proper adjectives to describe F#$! Yesss, Atlanta’s premier electro dance party for nearly four years running. Even back when it was held in a small, hot and cramped room with marginal ventilation, kids from all over Georgia and even nearby states like South Carolina, Alabama and Tennessee would come to F#$! Yesss for a sweat soaked night of unbridled hedonism. The Show Goes On…

After fan petitions and a protest outside of the New York City offices of Atlantic Records, Lupe Fiasco’s third album ‘Lasers’ will finally be released on March 8th, 2011. If you’re as big of fan of his as I am, you are extremely excited about this. Here’s the official video for the album’s first single, ‘The Show Goes On’ which samples a certain popular song from the band Modest Mouse. This is one of my favorite songs at the moment.

Skins

America, why can’t we have nice things? I caught a glimpse of MTV’s pedestrian attempt at adopting one of my favorite teen dramas, Skins, which was originally a British television show. My first problem with it, is the teenage hedonism of the American version feels more forced than in the original. The shameless decadence and rampant drug use in the British version feels more like a simple reality of teenage life than any sort of act of rebellion; halfway into an episode, you forget that they’re smoking weed and popping MDMA pills in practically every other scene. The Stickiness of Internet Memes

“Bitches Love (insert a random desirable thing)” is an internet meme which originated as a quote from the Adult Swim cartoon series, The Boondocks.  On the show, which is known for its brutal intelligence and social satirization , one of the characters says, “I sent that bitch a smiley face… bitches love smiley faces.” That was back in the first season of 2007. In 2008 through 2009, the meme with the stock line posted on various pictures made the rounds through websites like 4chan. Read More

Black Swan: the Soundtrack

Easily one of the most harrowing and psychologically tense movies I’ve ever seen, I immediately left Black Swan feeling like I needed a drink. This may or may not have something to do with me being able to relate to Nina’s (the main character played by Natalie Portman) singular obsession with perfection (practically to the point of madness), but this isn’t about me right now. Well, it’s not really about the movie either which comes highly recommended if you haven’t seen it.

Human Centipede II: The Full Sequence

If you have the same reaction I did seeing the title of this entry, I assume you’ve either see the original Human Centipede (First Sequence) or you know what  the premise of the film is. Director Tom Six, despite death threats on Facebook, intends to release Human Centipede II (The Full Sequence) sometime in 2011 courtesy of IFC Films. It’s described as 100% medically INaccurate; sort of a play on the first film that was described as 100% medically accurate (numerous doctors found that claim debatable). Read More

Haute Mess at King Plow Arts Center

This Thursday is the fourth (and final of 2010) edition of Haute Mess: a spectacular, bass thumping, ass shaking monthly dance party at King Plow Arts Center on the West side of Downtown Atlanta. Resident DJ’s Heroes + Villains (aka MEGANFOXXX), Mayhem and Dibase provide one of the most diverse crowds in the city with bone rattling dubstep, Southern rap and electronic music. Add an amazing stage & light display from Music Matters and photographic documentation by BLKOUT Photos x 335MM, and Haute Mess is an event definitely worth attending.

Granted, I may be bias because I’ll be emceeing the event but that’s neither here nor there.  Here’s video from the second edition in October.

It’s Like Tank Girl All Over Again

I’ve been seeing a handful of these asymmetric partially-buzzed haircuts wandering around Atlanta over the last month or two. It’s a good look, and it’s nice to see it making the migration from punk/crust girls to trend setting hipsters — mostly because the hipster girls I’ve seen rocking a side buzz tend to be a little more experimental with their haircuts and coloring.
