But it’s hard to look on the bad side when I Google Intel + Jobs and about 525 jobs come up. 130-something of them over $70,000. I think to myself, wow, NTS (not too shabby) Portland! Now I know nothing about Intel except there is a large campus in Hillsboro,OR, they have a song on their commercials that gets stuck in your head and President Obama made a speech there not too long ago.

Wikipedia can you tell me what Intel is now?

Intl is an American multinational semiconductor chip maker corporation headquartered in the United States and the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker, based on revenue. It is the inventor of the x86 series of microprocessors, the processors found in most personal computers.

Well unfortunately that doesn’t help people like me get a high paying job, but it’s nice to know they’re out there and so close to home!

Man-o-man am I bummed I missed this…

A birthday celebration of the life (and musical career) of Mr. Robert Sylvester Kelly aka R. Kelly.

DJs Nathan Detroit & Freaky Outty will be mining the pied piper of RnB’s massive catalog, from the early new jack swing of Public Announcement to the polished retro soul of last year’s critically lauded comeback “Love Letter,” as well as jams from Kells’ bizarro-futuristic RnB peers and protégés.

Synth-R&B crooner LeRoy Jerome will top off the affair with a set of all-new live covers sure to inspire bumps and grinds. It’s a night devoted to slippery sex jams from one of our last living musical (and crazed) geniuses, nestled in the swarthy confines of DAP on a foggy January night. Your mind and your body are telling you.

I’m hoping with the success of the first one, they’ll find it in their hearts to keep on with the Kells nights. But if I have to wait until next year I might just have to book a cruise instead.

I recently sat down with the newly married Humboldt County native and here’s what she told me about the store.

Marissa: How long have you been in business?
Megan: One year this month. I’m coming up my my anniversary! We’re going to have a big sale on the website and I’m trying really hard to find another location to have a pop-up-shop.
Marissa: You’ve had pop-up-shops in Portland before?
Megan: Yes, one at Le Train Bleu in September. I used to work there, I managed the store years ago.
Marissa: I found your site though Refinery29, how did they find you?
Megan: The found me through Cat Party. A blog I do with my friend Chelsea Fairless who lives in New York. We started (it) as a way to keep in touch. I’m in Portland she’s in New York. I see her twice a year when I go to Market (a buying event for retailers) and she comes here once a year. But this is how we keep in touch.

At this point, I’m a little taken a back as Cat Party is one of my favorite blogs. The’re funny girls and they make fashion fun, which is what I strive to do when I write about the topic. But I move on.

Marissa: What made you decide to open up an online store?
Megan: I worked at boutiques around town, and I wanted to try it for myself. I learned a lot from the other places I worked. I went to school at AI (The Art Institute of Portland) for apparel design, but decided wanted to go in the business direction, instead of designing. I would love to have to have my own line one day, it’s just not the right timing now.
Marissa: Summerland sells new and vintage clothes, where do you source your vintage from? Do you go to the bins? (Here in Portland “the bins” are goodwill sites that you can pick through before the clothes are washed, it’s nasty and you need to wear gloves and put your hair back, but you have first dibs on everything that comes into Portland Goodwill’s.)
Megan: No I don’t, I can’t, it’s too gross. I’ve been selling vintage online through eBay since 2000 then I moved to Etsy when that got big. Most of the vintage I sell is stockpiled from when I went thirfting a lot. I don’t really thrift it Portland now, it’s too picked through. When I drive home (to Humboldt) I stop in the weird little towns and thrift. I went to The Dalles recently (a neat town two hours East of Portland) and now even those thrift shops are all picked though.
Marissa: How long have you been in Portland?
Megan: Eight years.

We chat more, about life, boyfriends, marriage, love. She asks how long I’ve been in Portland and I tell her a year. She’s surprised how established I am for only being here a short time, and I tell her what I tell everyone when I talk about Portland.

Marissa: You can truly become whatever you want to become here. I can call myself a Fashion Journalist here, something that I struggled with in San Francisco. It’s cheap to live, the residents support each others art and there is a niche for everyone. She agrees with me and says…
Megan: Yea, I didn’t set out to be a stylist but I am. It just happened. I styled a friends thing and then it let to something else. Now I go to Nike and Adidas’s campus’s and do their photo shoots. I’ve styled a lot of their catalogs.

We then do some dress exchanging business and I head back to my day job. While Portlanders may support peoples art, I’ve still gotta pay my bills, and my art ain’t cutting it, for now.

As a correspondent at the Scout Network blog we have to cover an array of topics, some of which, admittedly, I am a bit of a novice. In particular, all things techy. While I write for a blog, have a personal blog, and am an internet addict I don’t know much about how it all works, let alone how to build something with technical “parts”. (See what I mean by novice)

So when I heard about iNDUSTRY

“A company made up of a small group of design professionals, with backgrounds in industrial design, interaction design, mechanical engineering, and brand storytelling. This allows them to tackle nearly any design challenge, pooling their multi-disciplinary expertise resulting in innovative solutions.”

I was instantly equal parts fascinated and confused. I went ahead and perused their Facebook page. And what I gathered from that is that their office is beautiful and obviously the people that started this company have great taste and enjoy a sleek modern aesthetic. So Finally I emailed them and they broke it down for me.

iNDUSTRY is a collective of creators, designers, thinkers and makers in Portland, Oregon that have joined together to form a new design and innovation company. They offer an integrated design approach, with a sweet spot in connected products (where industrial design and interaction design work together). INDUSTRY believes in rapid design and early prototyping, constantly testing design ideas through making. One of iNDUSTRY’s goals is to partner with a mix of companies – from large well-known brands, to the local start-up. INDUSTRY also has some of their own projects in the works (from consumer electronics, to furniture design, to web-based service) some of which will be going public soon!
Servies include:
Integrated product and interaction design
Brand strategy and messaging
Design ethnography and trends

Grimm one of the newest television shows to NBC cautions you – “remember the fairy tales your parents used to tell you before bedtime? Well, those weren’t stories, they were warnings”.

The show filmed all over Portland was filming outside my work the other day and I got to see how the magic happens. Seeing as the writers of the show had to write for rain due to the NW playing such a strong backdrop to the plot I got to see trucks come in and spray the streets down to make it look wet and misters get set up all around the Naito Fountain to make the scene appear rainy. Despite getting approximately 35 inches of rain per year here in P-Town, the day they were filming this scene was not one of them.

What’s cool about Grimm claiming to be in Portland and actually filmed in Portland is that we get shots of the stars on the MAX (Metropolitan Area Express), that’s our form of rapid transit. People eating Voodoo’s Maple Bacon Bars, that’s our form of doughnut, and saying “I’ll meet you and 13th and Alder”, that our form of a hip neighborhood. Unlike TNT’s show Leverage that has filmed here for years but claims to be Boston. Grimm’s got Portland pride and I like it!

Flash forward to a month before 2012 and the boys that make up this unique and highly original jewelry line can call the trendy, upscale shopping neighborhood of NW 23rd home. That’s right, less than three years after they started, with writes up in Womens Wear Daily, goodies given away in the ESPY awards swag bag, and a Sticks & Stones smart car by Gen Art these guys are all brick and mortared out.

Serious Businessis really anything but. The rap, electro, dance duo loves to make light of pop-culture references like MILF, croning “why buy the milk when you can get the cow for free”. Or when speaking about the olympic swimmer “if you look like Michael Phelps, it helps” one of the many boy on boy loving lyrics from their most popular single “Hot Damn” – watch the video below and I dare you not to dance.

The boys (Danny Diana-Peebles and Jason Mampel) just released their debut album, Kool, on Futro Records, and had a record release party to celebrate the momentous occasion. I was there with a camera and my dancin’ shoes and these two dudes did not let me down. Along with the great dance tracks was an eye full by by Alex Boyce who provides live video programming, not to mention two hot babes in the front dressed as secretaries that meant business, seriously.

While Portland may be a small place and sometimes feel more like a town than a city, what we lack in bright lights and skyscrapers we make up for by leaps and bounds in the culinary department. The amount of tasty restaurants in this place are impossible to count. Also countless are the amount farm-to-table, locally responsible chefs in our City Of Roses. Big shot among them being Jason French of Ned Ludd who competed in what was a fun filled night of beer pairing, competition, camaraderie and…proposal. Yes the Deschutes Chef Challenge brought out people from all walks of Portland life. The judges included Tracy Howard, associate editor of Imbibe Magazine, Steve Body, author of Seattle P.I.’s beer blog, The Pour Fool, Sal Zizzo, Potland Timber and owner of Zizzo’s Food Cart, Caprial, Caprial + John The Kitchen, and Gary Fish, owner of Deschutes Brewery.

The menu, chefs, and beer they were paired with are as followed:

Chef Jason French from Ned Ludd
*Turkey Confit with Polenta, Hazelnuts and Pickled Cranberries
- Paired with Jubelale

Chef Gavin Ledson from Davis Street Tavern
*Banana Braised Pork Jowl Banh Mi with Chainbreaker Wort Pickled Carrot, Daikon Root & House Pate
- Paired with Chainbreaker White IPA

Chef Sarah Schafer from Irving Street Kitchen
*Spice Seared Sea Scallops with Pork Belly, Black Eyed Peas, and Bourbon Mustard Jus
- Paired with The Stoic

Chef Paul Bachand from Recipe
*Hand Formed Duck Fat Sope with Crispy Duck “Carnitas”, Smoked Hazelnut Mole and The Abyss Creme Fraiche
- Paired with The Abyss

Chef John Eisenhart from Pazzo Ristorante
*Veal Cheeks with Moscato, Candy Cap & Savoy Cabage
- Paired with Mirror Pond Pale Ale

Chefs Jeff Usinowicz from Deschutes Brewery
*Dry Aged Baby Back Ribs with Tart Cherry BBQ Sauce, Yam Goat Cheese Croquettes, Roasted Onion Salad
- Paired with Armory XPA

The place was packed; I couldn’t see any open seats in the large dining room. Everyone was having a great time when a lovely romantic surprise happened at the end of the night. Taken from a gentleman’s love of Deschutes beer and his girlfriend, he proposed to her before dessert and (spoiler alert) she said yes! I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t get teary eyed for a second. In short, I ate a lot of pig cooked confit, meaning “in fat”. The six courses were all amazing in there own right, and while I couldn’t finish any of them they were some of the tastiest things I’ve had in months – I surely don’t need to eat again until 2012.
