Keeping it Underground

Claire | February 18th, 2011

I hate pop music.  I don’t know why, but something evil happens to my ears when I hear that tinny mid-frequency range sound that I so often associate with the radio, the mall, or a huge top 40 club.  It makes me cringe and walk away–as far away as I can–from the source of the sounds I so despise.  That said, there is the occasional pop song / band that does it for me.  Pearl Jam’s ‘Daughter‘ from Vitalogy is amazing.  I would watch them play an entire set if I knew they were going to play that song.  And I love love love Vampire weekend’s cynical take on pop culture.  I listen to the lyrics from songs like Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa and I can’t help but smile.  Their sound is just so happy and fun punky bubble-gum catchy.  My personal favs: Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, Holiday, and Taxi Cab.

All things pop aside, there are some pretty amazing artists / bands out there that I would love to see play unplugged. Prince would be incredible.  Imagine him doing ‘Cream’ and ‘Erotic City’ unplugged.  Wow.  Beach House would also be a trip, and Caribou would rock, although I’m not sure how they would sound if they lost their electrified edge.  It could be pretty radtastic.

Concert questions

Jeff | February 16th, 2011

1. Of the list provided, in order, I would like to see My Morning Jacket, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, and Band of Horses.

2. First and foremost, I’d like to see Fleet Foxes play acoustically. Robin Pecknold’s voice is meant for dreamy acoustic settings and it would be pretty amazing to see them live in an intimate, acoustic-only environment. Read More

A Summer Of Going Big

Kuma | February 16th, 2011

I have to admit, I am very rarely one for going to big shows. When I say big shows, I mean major concerts, Grande sized headlining acts, way too many people.

I would be most interested in seeing Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and KiD CuDi with Ratatat.

If I could see any three bands perform acoustically, I would love to see Radiohead, Arcade Fire, and Sufjan Stevens.

Arcade Fire would attract the majority of my friends. Read More

Wide Appeal of Music versus Acoustic

Dicky | February 16th, 2011

Of the bands listed, the two I’d most be interested in seeing would be Cut Copy, and Weezer, in that order, and may in fact be the only two on the list that I would be interested in seeing at all. Thinking of all bands possible, and trying to bear in mind who might have a wide appeal, I of course would always go see The Cure play, or Morrissey, and definitely the Magnetic Fields. Read More

1. )I would be most interested to see Cut Copy and Weezer, personally. Those two artists speak to me more that any of the others listed.

Q2. Keeping in mind the notion of appealing to a wide audience, if you could see ANY 3 bands perform acoustically, who would they be?

2.) Almost everybody likes Weezer, in my experience. Read More

Music assignment

Q1. If I had to choose to see 2 of these artists, it would either be a Cut Copy and Weezer concert or an Alicia Keys and Drake concert. Mixing them would be awkward. Read More

Special Assignment: Suggestions For a Free Outdoor Concert

Arielle | February 11th, 2011

I’ve spent most of the last four years working professionally as a music journalist, so I’ve seen a good chunk of the artists on that long list perform live. One I have actually not seen, and which I would be super happy to see perform live, is Cut Copy. Obviously, since they’re Australian, they don’t make it over to the States too frequently, and to Miami, where I live, even less. They would be a great choice as, even though they are hardly the most mainstream-recognized out of the bunch, their danceable sound is very inviting and great for getting a crowd enthusiastic.
