City: Johannesburg, South Africa
Jamal is a multi-disciplinary artist most concerned with contemporary African culture.
After completing a degree in fashion he moved to London where he gained international experience at The Ethical Fashion Forum, The Super Super and Dazed and Confused. During his travels Jamal picked up a camera and started shooting images for his blog, which would later become a visual diary, giving an account of life in urban South Africa.
After two years abroad, Jamal moved back to Johannesburg where he has blossomed as a creative, working as fashion editor of arts&culture quarterly Mahala, styling music videos for hip-new artists such as Spoek Mathambo and curating events at the forefront of downtown Johannesburg’s burgeoning art scene.
Discontent with the lack of a media platform for alternative youth culture in Johannesburg, Jamal co-founded a web magazine called Cuss, in which he works as creative director, collaborating with a range of artists to produce content that celebrates the diversity of sub culture in and around the city.
Having recently opened his first solo exhibition, Jamal now aims to continue producing art and contributing to the continued development of a South African aesthetic in the arts.
