City: Miami, FL
Born and raised in Miami, Lolo is a cornerstone for the city’s indie scene. At 23, she opened her own independent record store called Sweat Records. Sweat has since become a very successful shop, expanding to a bigger location with a coffee bar inside the store. They regularly host events, and also lend their name as promotion to many other independent ventures. She is also interested in art and design, so she handles all the design for the store (and does her own stitching projects on the side).
Lolo hosts a popular weekly party called ‘Fridays’ at the Miami club Vagabond, where she invites bands to play after she spins a DJ set. Engaged with the local community – she is on a new music task force for the county’s Film & Entertainment Office, and also serves on the Arts & Entertainment Council for the city of Miami.
Balancing her creativity is a passion for whole-earth nutrition and sustainability. She started a blog called Meatless Miami, which quickly became so popular that the local weekly paper, the New Times, asked her to write a column for their dining section. Her coffee shop serves only organic fair-trade products, with a large selection of soy and rice milk, and all of the cups and napkins are recycled. She also loves to garden.
