Every single day, a new music video premiere is on TV or the Internet. This model, canonized by MTV and then later transported to video sites like MySpace and YouTube has become a standard for premiering videos, however, this convention is already being challenged by young creative artists who are pushing boundaries in the music industry.

That is the case of young singer Mallu Magalhães, who just premiered a video of her song “Velha e Louca” (Crazy Old Lady) in an exclusive cinema session for the press. The project is the result of a partnership between Hungry Man Projects and Sony Music. In the film, directed by Paul Gandhinagar, Mallu appears on the terrace of a building in the city of São Paulo, singing, dancing and riding a bicycle, all very delicate and subtle, while her band plays in the background.

The musician and singer’s boyfriend, Marcelo Camelo, a member of cult Brazilian indie band Los Hermanos, also appears in the clip playing some instruments. ”Crazy Old Lady” one of the tracks of her latest album “Pitanga”, released last September and produced by Camelo. The general audience can get to watch the new music video from this Friday (20) in one of the several theatres throughout Brazil exhibiting it. Less than 3 minutes long, it is shown along with teaser trailers at the beginning of feature-length movies, such as the new Steven Spielberg, The Adventures of Tintin.

***

But maybe you give it a second chance, and you listen a little harder to the lyrics of this pint sized, baby-voiced female rapper. And you start to feel like not only is she getting one over on pop music with her intentionally irritating style, but actually her playful and brazenly self-aggrandizing lyrics just kinda win you over. She’s Kreayshawn, a skinny little 23 year old from Oakland, rapping about how her kitty cat is gonna rip your kitty cat to shreds.

Her hit, Gucci Gucci, is a hilarious indictment of hyper brand conscious hip-hop culture. Sometimes she sounds so much like a foul mouthed child it is startling. But her bravado is admirable for a little white girl from Oakland. “I got the swag and it’s pumpin out my ovaries.”

Her mixtape Kittys x Choppas was rad and I’m anxiously awaiting her studio album due out this year. She was nominated for Best New Artist on the MTV Awards, so I’m expecting that her shows are gonna be mobbed at SXSW this year, but I’m looking forward to seeing this wunder girl in person.

I think these are the first images ever where I see the face from Come to Daddy and Windowlicker in a video answering an interview.

We are talking about a 1996 interview from Richard B. James aka Aphex Twin, held at Oxfordshire Big Love Festival by a brave female journalist named Simone Angel for her show ThePartyZone. She manages to appear curious to know more about computer music. What is quite special for a rare and underground figure such as Aphex Twin, the show was aired on MTV and lasted around an hour. Richard has plenty of little stories to offer, like his hate relationship with his neighbours. I can’t imagine seeing the equivalent of this today, since I’ve read this piece about the founding of MTV and the rapid changes in its corporate culture.

What are we seeing? British TV shows are extremely popular on the Scout Network—more popular, it seems, than most American TV shows. Thanks to Netflix and the increasing ease of downloading TV content, leading-edge Americans have found an alternative to Hollywood in the less sanitized, lower budget world of British TV. The drama Skins, which features more than a little teenage sex and drug use, has found a growing audience (unlike the ill-fated MTV remake), along with the hilarious Peep Show, which is available for streaming on Hulu. Sky1’s An Idiot Abroad was downloaded by the torrenting audience long before it was picked up by a US channel. Other British shows popping up on the Network include Luther, about a London cop and his “moral gray area,” and Spooks, about the British Secret Service. The latest series of Doctor Who being launched in both the UK and US is another recent example of this trend.

Why is it happening? British TV satisfies a craving for grittier, less glossy and sanitized TV entertainment. Shows like Skins and Peep Show have realistically spare sets, actors without much makeup, and are filmed on videotape instead of film – all of which gives them an “indie” appeal that is almost always missing from Hollywood shows. (No matter how much US shows like Modern Family attempt to create a realistic “documentary” feel with their camera style, the end result is always glossy, professional, and brilliantly lit). These British shows also treat controversial subjects like sex, drugs, race, and moral gray areas with a casual attitude that is rare in the US. In fact, MTV’s recent US version of Skins not only watered down the controversial subjects, but placed too much emphasis on them – instead of just treating these subjects like facts of life, the US version magnified and sensationalized them, which made them seem contrived, and a lot less interesting. British TV gives American audiences an alternative to this overly sanitized, sensationalized content.

The opportunity: These British shows represent a key content trend in television: the desire for grittier, more casual, “indie”-feeling entertainment, and an aversion to Hollywood sensationalism. The opportunity for communications strategy could be as simple as aligning with this existing content (i.e. partnering with the British shows themselves, their actors, or platforms that make it easier to view British TV globally); or, on a larger scale, to recognize that this content shift is poised to explode in the US, and is ripe to be “owned” by a brand or organization who pounces early.

“In the British version of Skins, the shameless decadence and rampant drug use feels more like a simple reality of teenage life than any sort of act of rebellion. The hedonism in the American version feels more forced.” – Julian, Atlanta Scout

America’s Best Dance Crew, my favorite reality dance show and one of my favorite television shows in general, is back for its sixth season. This year, there’s an all girl crew from New Zealand of all places, a crew of ten year olds from the Jersey Shore representing for the future guidos of America and even a pole dancing (yes, you read that correctly) crew. If you’re not glued to your television set every Thursday night at 10pm, I’m not really sure what the hell you’re doing with your life.

I only fell for the British teen dram-edy Skins just a few weeks ago, but boy I fell hard. It’s everything you want out of a TV show: troubled, yet relatable, pretty people, romantic intrigue, and a little slapstick. It’s also everything you want out of a depiction of teen life: kids who look and act just as awkward as teenagers look and act.

Sure, these kids are having way more romantic rendezvous than most adults, and the parties they throw are outrageous in their decadence and destructive abilities, but these teens still come off as the still forming proto-adults they really are.

MTV has just launched their version of the immensely popular British show, and as can be expected it’s an easier-to-swallow version of the original. Everybody is a little bit prettier, characters fit their stereotypes a little more neatly, and America is up in arms about the sexual topics involving people under 18. All is as can be expected. I recommend calling up the original on Netflix ASAP.

What are we seeing? Finding information is rarely a challenge anymore. The challenge is finding the right information: the most interesting and personally relevant pieces of news, art, or entertainment. Hunger for highly curated experiences is growing rapidly alongside a surge in sites and shows that find the newest, most unique items in a category, and present them in engaging ways. Interweb3000, a website in Berlin, delivers the “nerdiest” examples of art and entertainment, while The Vice Guide to Everything, an MTV show, selects obscure but informative current issues and devotes six-minute news segments to them. Escape into Life, an art website, introduces visual art and goes a step further by pairing it with prose. At its core, Twitter functions as a prime curation device, filtering to people the exact information they crave. Curating is as old as the gallery, but the web has allowed it to become much more specific and far-reaching.

“The Interweb 3000 is run by the ominous Dr. Katze, who trawls the internet day after day in search of the most nerdy, cool, arty stuff that you can’t come across on Google.” – Felix, Berlin

Why is it happening? With so much information available these days, being constantly hip to the latest thing—even the obscure—is expected. Curated experiences allow people to easily stay relevant with the unique information that builds on their individuality, a key motive for today’s younger generations. Curators themselves can even become a sort of rock star, achieving celebrity for their ability to find and deliver just the right niche content.

The Opportunity: Curated experiences will be a dominant theme in the future of media, and it presents a great opportunity for brands to increase their relevancy – and in turn become a part of a highly personalized experience. Brands also can become curators themselves, effectively shaping the attitudes and direction of their category. They can ensure they’re featured regularly in the curated sites their forward-minded audience follows. The celebrity curator also presents a new personality for a brand to align with, support, or organically create as a brand spokesperson.

I don’t expect to learn anything from MTV, other than the importance of “T-Shirt Time,” so when I saw the commercials for the news program The Vice Guide to Everything to say I was skeptical about the quality of the show might be an understatement.

Vice Magazine, started in Montreal but now based in my hometown Brooklyn, has been a cornerstone of hipster culture for years now. You can pick up copies of the magazine at American Apparel. I’m pretty sure I have one of their books The Vice Guide to Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll around my apartment somewhere, which is entertaining and snarky but I wouldn’t exactly consider it informative in any serious way.

This show, however, is. Seriously. I watched an episode recently and now I need to see all of them. The news segments are brief — about six minutes — but all of them were extremely interesting. One involved a correspondent testing out bulletproof clothing. Another, the most interesting (and fucked up) segment of the four took the viewer to an Arms Convention in the Middle East where generals from all over the world and weapon makers (most of which are American companies) commiserate over the newest and most effective products for maiming, killing, destroying and blowing shit up.

I highly recommend checking out the show.
