I am infinitely interested in artists using the web in new and exciting ways — that’s about the only internet-related news I get really excited for — but sometimes an artist’s fervor for a new platform seems to cloud their judgment of whether technology hurts or hinders a piece. Hence, my skepticism around the latest Flaming Lips track, “Two Blobs Fucking.”

The track requires twelve, count them TWELVE, computers, smartphones, what have you, cued to twelve different YouTube tracks playing simultaneously in order to play back the whole of the song. They re-released their 1997 album Zaireeka on a similar platform, but that only requires four devices.

Now, I might eat my words if I ever succeed in wrangling twelve willing participants with compatible devices. My mind could be blown by the multi-tracked throbbing and pulsing of the video and music, but most likely I’ll never get to witness the spectacle.

French contemporary artist Cyprien Gaillard is currently taking part in the DAAD art program in Berlin (former residents included Damian Hurst and Nan Goldin), so I had the privilage of seeing a preview of his latest videos.

They’re a beautiful blend of DIY music videos and short narrative films, all done in a retrospective documentary-style shot on old video, tape and digital cameras.

The music is again supplied by French symphonic composer Koudlam, who has been collaborating with Cyprien on many of his previous works including Desniansky Raion and See You All. You can see more videos from Cyprien on youtube or visit Koudlam’s own page to listen to his enthropic compositions. Cyprien has new exhibitions opening in Warsaw, Berlin and New York this week.

Amusement is a beautifully made computer, gaming and lifestyle magazine from another frenchman – tech entrepreneur Adbel Bounane. Their website showcases past issues of the magazine, along with exclusive online image galleries and art projects.

It’s a really well run site, and is ideal for digging up inspiration while keeping abreast of the latest developments in the online and virtual worlds. It’s also a good place to find out about upcoming events and seeing how others are utilising the staggeringly rapid developments in online media.
