I’m beginning to wonder if there’s something in the water here. Either that or if somebody is dosing the coffee of major TV network heads with Vancouver propaganda.

I’m beginning to wonder if there’s something in the water here. Either that or if somebody is dosing the coffee of major TV network heads with Vancouver propaganda.

A recent headcount has shown that Vancouver is home to more science fiction TV productions than almost anywhere else. V, Dollhouse, Sanctuary, Fringe, and Smallville just to name a few.

I guess that’s the gloriousness of our fair city; not only does it have enough chrome and shine to make you think you’re in Bangkok circa 2030, you’re also an hour’s drive away from a perfect version of Sherwood Forest.

Post-Sanctuary‘s signing with the SciFi network, the big buzz is on Riese to go all the way. Currently a strictly web based series, the steam-punk fairy tale of moral ambiguity and political intrigue has its fangs deep into the city and has the look and the feel that should easily get it signed to a cable network anytime soon.

Fall’s here and I’m actually getting excited about turning my tv on for more than just hockey. Within the massive flood of re-hashed sitcom stars on new shows and the tight fisted smothering of more boredom-inducing reality shows, there lie gems which could actually make tv into art again. Kooky eh?

AMC is following up their overwhelming successes with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, by reviving the cult classic, The Prisoner and it’s got me giggling like a school girl. They’re taking it back to the old school, but instead of engaging in blatant homage, they’re remixing an old fave for the 2009 crew.

The Prisoner’s classic morality tale of a British secret agent being held in a mysterious village while his captors try and figure out why he quit, has always been legendary and I’m surprised nobody has tried to re-do it sooner. Jim Cavizel looks like he’ll do an alright job of replacing Patrick Mcgoohan as The Prisoner and Ian McKellen looks positively evil as Number 2.

Looking just as interesting and embracing the slight scent of cheddar is ABC’s remake of V. I could never get into the original mid-80′s mini series, it felt like it was trying a little too hard with the bad special FX for its hamster eating aliens trying to secretly take over the world. This remake looks to keep me in check though as it looks stunning, seems to be well written and has a trump card in the form of Lost’s Elizabeth Mitchell, whom I adore.

There are projects in the works to be concerned about though. Do we really need a tv adaptation of the Witches Of Eastwick or the return of the Rockford Files? Cultural pillaging is commonplace these days, it’s an understandable and easy way to appeal to an audience and guarantee that you’re gonna make a buck.

Finally, sci-fi and fantasy fans have loads to be happy about, we just need to make sure that Sy Fy actually gets the animated Battlestar Galactica series up and running and some of us my never leave the house again.
