Carnival has gone mobile. With the aid of dozens of apps, the foliões of the 21st century can now easily find the nearest street party, meet their friends lost in the crowd and even find a taxi when it’s time to go home.
Brazil hosts the biggest street carnival in the world. The five-day celebration takes the country by storm in February, with millions of fancy costume clad people dancing after the blocos, which are like a moving block party with a theme and a predetermined route to follow.
Only in Rio there were 82 registered blocos this year, some gathering over 2.5 million people. All of them could be located using the app Blocos do Rio, available for iPhone and Android, that uses it’s geolocation features to let you discover blocos nearby. Other favorites are WhatsApp, for locating and talking to friends; Foursquare, for alerting people what bloco you checked in and Onde tem taxi aqui?, which spots taxi stands in the city.

Estes blocos podiam ser localizados usando o aplicativo ‘Blocos do Rio’, para iPhone e Android, que usa geolocalização para descobera de blocos próximos a você. Outros favoritos são o ‘WhatsApp’, para encontrar e conversar com amigos; o ‘Foursquare’, para que as pessoas saibam onde você fez checkin e o ‘Onde Tem Taxi Aqui?’, que ajuda a encontrar os pontos de táxi da cidade.
