Bollywood Theatre: A Much Needed Faire In Portland

Marissa | April 2nd, 2012

Cutely titled Bollywood Theatre is the newest addition to one of my favorite neighborhoods in P-Town. Located at 2039 NE Alberta in the same building that is also home to the Salt & Straw’s scoop shop. B-wood’s chef, Troy MacLarty, an alum of Berkeley’s Chez Panisse, had a thought that went something like this, “where do all the Indian eats in this town?”

What I love about this, is that I’ve had the same exact thought since I moved here from the Bay Area less than two years ago. In a place chock full of Thai restaurants, the only place one can grab a decent Indian meal is at the carts on SW 5th.

B-wood’s casual yet trendy atmosphere is a far cry from most traditional Indian restaurants, making for a fun experience. With a cocktail menu ranging from Pimms Cup to a Bollywood “Paanch” (dark rum, rooibos tea, and soda water) and huge glass garage doors that roll up. I think this is going to be my go to dinner spot when it’s too hot to stay in and cook this summer. Bonus for it being biking distance from my house and my fave bar – The Bye and Bye.
