A vintage tough sport from the 60s is the new trend for Brazilian girls who like action. The female Roller Derby is a competition where two teams of 5 girls fight each other, roller skating in the same direction around a track or on a flat track.
The goal is for the ‘jammer’ to score by overlapping the opponent team, while ‘blockers’ and ‘pivots’ make way for her and try to hold the other contenders. Following the success of the independent movie Whip It in 2009, directed by Drew Barrymore, and dealing with the theme, girls all around the world started their own leagues. This was the case with The Ladies of Helltown, the first Flat Track Roller Derby team in Brazil.
With suggestive nicknames like Beki Band’Aid, Napalm Dash and Atom Cockroach, the team has 7 titular players and 16 substitutes under training (called Fresh Meats). They train hard with a coach during the week at a local city park and get together in the weekends at an old viaduct - which is closed down permanently by the city – to compete against other teams and solo enthusiasts. While this sport is violent for some, it also has a lot of style and grace.
In Brazil, Roller Derby has already a lifestyle of its own which involves clothing, references to Japanese cartoons and pinups. It has also made the Helltown ladies a reference for the sport in Brazil, being featured in the press all over the country.

Um esporte vintage dos anos 60 é a nova tendência para as meninas brasileiras que gostam de ação. O Roller Derby feminino é uma competição onde duas equipes de 5 meninas lutam entre si patinando na mesma direção em torno de uma trilha ou em uma pista reta.
O objetivo é que a “jammer” marque pontos ultrapassando o time adversário, enquanto ‘blockers’ e ‘pivôs’ abrem caminho para ela e tentar segurar as outras adversárias. Após o sucesso de Garota Fantástica (Whip It) filme independente de 2009, dirigido por Drew Barrymore, que tratava do tema, as meninas de todo o mundo começaram a montar suas próprias ligas. Este foi o caso com a equipe The Ladies of Helltown, a primeira equipe de Flat Track Roller Derby (pista reta) no Brasil.
Com apelidos sugestivos como Beki Band’Aid, Dash Napalm e Atom Cockroach, o time tem 7 jogadoras titulares e 16 suplentes em treinamento (chamadas de Fresh Meats). Eles treinam com um treinador durante a semana no parque Ibirapuera e se reúnem nos fins de semana no Minhocão para competir com outras equipas e entusiastas solo. Enquanto o esporte pode ser considerado violento para alguns, também tem muito estilo e graça.
No Brasil, a Roller Derby já tem um estilo de vida próprio, que envolve vestuário, referências a desenhos animados japoneses e pinups. Ele também tornou as Helltown uma referência para o esporte no Brasil, sendo destaques na imprensa por todo o país.
