The western world has Hallpween, a day in which the souls of dead people can visit the world. The Eastern world also has a similar holiday, but is not merely one day, it lasts the entire month.
In Taiwan, during the lunar calendar in July which is called “the ghost month, the door of Hell opens and all the lonesome and planetary ghosts travel to the human world to look for food to eat until July 30. On July 15 is named Ghost Festival Day. On this day, each and every family prepares sumptuous food and sacrificial offerings to the netherworld ghost. This day we call “Zhong Yuan Pu Du”. In the Taiwanese folklore, there are many taboos in the ghost month. Most can be summed up as “moving is inferior to being static”. Marriage, buying property, decorating, traveling far from home, having an operation and so on, are to be abstained from!
Here are some other taboos: do not refer to the word “ghost, do not touch other people's shoulder, do not sleep with disheveled hair, do not go out at night , do not to insert the chopsticks in the food center, do not whistle in the evening and so on. Do ghosts really exist? I do not know but one thing is for sure, from midnight to dawn, there are very few vehicles on the road during this month.
